Power of Choice: You Can Do Whatever You Want; It's Up to You

Updated: Jun 1, 2024

Every now and then, a stranger crosses your path and imparts wisdom that shifts your perspective, helps you get unstuck, and creates a ripple of change that alters your path forward in life. I had such an encounter at a work conference several years ago when I met a kind, insightful man who shared the advice he always gave his children about making choices:

“You Can Do Whatever You Want; It's Up To You.”

Initially, I was perplexed, thinking, "No, I can’t do whatever I want; I have responsibilities and obligations." But as I reflected on his words, I realized they were about making intentional choices that allow your personal freedom and autonomy to flourish. For much of my life, I believed my path was dictated by external forces—family expectations, societal norms, and my own internal belief that my value was based on doing what was expected and needed, and that it was selfish to put myself first. Breaking free from both external and internal expectations was terrifying. Insecurities about making my own decisions and a fear of being disliked or rejected for no longer accommodating others, kept me in a state of comfortable mediocrity.

Yet, as I gradually pursued my own interests and passions, I discovered a profound sense of freedom and fulfillment. Realizing that I could choose my own path and that the power to shape my life was in my hands helped to open my mind to unlimited possibilities. Embracing the Power of Choice transformed me into a more authentic person as I began aligning my choices and actions with my inner values and desires. I felt empowered to make healthier choices, as I became more attuned to what genuinely nourished my body, mind, and spirit. Being in control of my decisions also fostered a sense of responsibility, helping me understand the positive outcome of investing in things that mattered to me and my personal goals. The transformation was profound, enabling me to shift from feeling like a passive participant to becoming the main character in my own story.

When you recognize that you have the Power of Choice, life shifts from something that merely happens to you to something you actively shape through your choices. So, are you ready to begin your own journey of embracing the Power of Choice? Start by taking the following actions:

  • Work to Accept that it’s okay to Prioritize your own Needs and Desires. This can be challenging, especially if you’ve been conditioned to seek approval from others. Taking time for Self-Reflection through journaling or meditation can help you understand your values, passions, and goals and connect with your true self to clarify what matters most to you.

  • Practice Decision-Making by making Intentional Choices. Start with small decisions to build your confidence in trusting yourself and your decisions. Learn to let go of the fear of disappointing others or making mistakes through understanding that each choice is an opportunity for growth. As you become more comfortable making choices, gradually tackle more significant decisions.

  • Embrace the idea that your Time and Energy are Valuable Resources, and it’s up to you on how you use them. Establish clear, intentional and achievable goals that align with your values. Doing so provides you with a path to follow and ensures that your actions are purposeful.

  • Practice Mindfulness to Stay Present and Connected to your Inner Self, ensuring your decisions are genuinely reflective of your true intentions and wants. Regularly check in with yourself to ensure that you are making choices that align with your true desires.

Ultimately, the Power of Choice is about reclaiming your autonomy and living a life that is genuinely yours. By transforming your mindset and embracing your ability to make intentional decisions, you become a more authentic, happier, and healthier person. You align your actions with your deepest desires, leading to a life of purpose and fulfillment. So remember, You Can Do Whatever You Want; It’s Up To You. Take the reins of your life and start making choices that reflect the incredible person you are meant to be.

Be Well,

Nicole
